University of Michigan
In 1985, Richard Moll coined the phrase, “Public Ivies” which was a term he used to refer to the top 8 public universities in that nation whose educational programs most closely resembled that of an Ivy League School. The University of Michigan, along with seven other schools, was listed as one the best public universities in the nation, and to this day the title still holds true.
The Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department’s undergraduate and graduate programs at UM continually rank in the Top Ten in the country. Students at UM have unparalleled access to state-of-the-art technologies and a curriculum led by some of the leading experts in the field today. UM offers degrees in Computer Science and Computer Engineering. The Computer science program requires students to have a fundamental understanding of computer software, hardware, and theory, but it also allows for students to modify their course work with their own areas of interest such as databases, architecture, networks, artificial intelligence, and graphics, electronic commerce, web information systems, and computer game design.
The Computer Engineering program will teach students how to become world leaders in good systems and applications programming, hardware design, network management, and consulting in many other areas. For more information visit www.eecs.umich.edu or call 734-763-6563.
Michigan State University
In 2009, U.S. News and World Report rank Michigan State University’s Engineering program 59th best in the country. The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is a unit within the College of Engineering at MSU and the success of this program is due to courses that are taught by full-time faculty members and reflect cutting-edge research developments, small class sizes, and hands-on learning. Students have the option of pursuing either a degree in Computer Engineering or Computer Science. Additionally, students will be able to choose a specialization area which most interests them. These areas include Cognitive Science, Game Design and Development, Information Technology, and Spatial Information Processing. For more information visit www.cse.msu.edu or call 517-353-3148.
Michigan Technological University
Since 1885, Michigan Tech University has been a leading institute for its technology, engineering, and scientific degree programs and research. The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers a degree program which will teach students valuable computing skills which will guarantee a bright and successful career. Some key feature of the Computer Engineering program are a unique and interesting first year program common for all engineering majors, a “Digital Signal Processing (DSP) First” approach that is found at only a few of the leading programs in the nation, multiple opportunities to gain real-world experience through internships, co-ops, and research, and many more. Also located at Michigan Tech is the School of Technology.
The Computer Network and System Administration program, established in 2003, is an exciting new way for students to focus their studies on fields such as Network/Systems Engineering, Systems and Network Security, VoIP Engineering, Network/Systems Administration, and Technical Operations Management. Central Michigan University
Central Michigan University’s College of Science and Technology offers four computing majors which are Computer Integrated Manufacturing, Computer Science, Computer Science/Mathematics, and Computer Technology. All four of these majors will provide students for a career in the one of the most exciting and fastest-growing fields today. These programs are led by an expert faculty, advanced facilities that include a UNIX/LINUX workstation lab, and valuable experience through a wide range of internships opportunities.
The Computer Integrated Manufacturing major is aimed at students who wish to pursue a career in CIM/CAD/CAM related fields. The Computer Science major provides students with a broad variety of possibilities including careers in fields such as application programming, software design, systems analysis, and many more. The Computer Science/Mathematics major places added emphasis on mathematics and how this field and the computer science field coincide. The Computer Technology major offers an even more diverse curriculum to this University’s College of Science and Technology. For more information visit www.cmich.edu or call 989-774-4000.
Lawrence Technological University
Lawrence Technological University is a private institution located in Southfield, Michigan. The Computer Science program at Lawrence Tech focuses on development and analysis of computer software, algorithms, and technologies. Software development is a major emphasis at Lawrence Tech and students may choose a concentration in business software development, scientific software development, network software development, or game software development.
The Department of Engineering offers students a major in Compute Engineering. Students will learn the fundamentals of circuits, systems, and software associated with the design of programmable systems used for general purpose computing, communications, control, or signal processing.
